puppy chow

My husband LOVES puppy chow.  Really, who doesn't?  The problem with puppy chow is that it makes a ton and then you start eating it and can't stop.  You know what I'm talking about.  If you don't, though, you really, really need to make some of this.

It's been a rough week to work retail.  And currently my husband is working retail.  So, I decided to surprise him with some of his favorite treat when he gets home from work today. 



Rather than prepare a mondo batch of the stuff like all of the recipes make, I found a good recipe and cut it in half.  I figure that Christmas is coming and there's going to be plenty of goodies coming our way soon.  A half batch is more than enough.  So, here's the recipe for a (half) batch of puppy chow.

P.S. Please don't feed this to your puppy despite it's name.  Chocolate and dogs don't mix.

Puppy Chow
Recipe from Savory Sweet Life

Ingredients:
-4 1/2 c Chex or any type of square cereal (corn, rice, and/or wheat)
-1/2 c chocolate chips
-1/4 c peanut butter
-2 tbsp butter
-1 tsp vanilla
-3/4 c powdered sugar

Put the powdered sugar in a gallon Ziplock bag and set aside.  Put cereal in a large bowl and set aside.  In a microwaveable bowl, combine the chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter.  Microwave on high for 30-45 seconds, stirring once.  Microwave for another 15 seconds if the mixture isn't yet smooth.  Once smooth, add the vanilla to the mixture.  Pour the mixture over the dry cereal.  Stir the cereal gently until it's evenly coated.   Spoon the cereal into the bag with powdered sugar.  Seal the bag and shake until all of the cereal is coated with powdered sugar.  Spread the puppy chow onto parchment paper to coal.  Store in a closed container in the refrigerator until you're ready to enjoy it.
